Fire Risk Assessments Berkshire

The laws governing fire risk have been tightened considerably. Under the Fire Safety order 2005 it is now a requirement that for a non-domestic building, a ‘responsible person’ (usually the owner, employer or occupier) must carry out a “suitable and sufficient” Fire Risk Assessment and implement a fire management plan. We are a Third Party Certificated provider of Fire Risk Assessments in Berkshire and the surrounding areas.

Newbury Fire Protection provide guidance and assistance in completing your written records to ensure you comply with fire risk assessment legislation. Current law stipulates that you must keep a written record of your fire risk assessment if your business has 5 or more people.

You will need to consider certain areas within your organisation and we can help as part of our assessment. These include:

(this is not an exhaustive list).

Fire Risk Assessments

Our assessors use these considerations in your fire risk assessment as the basis of our approach to follow PAS (79)  (Publicly Available Specification 79).

Are you confident your Fire Risk Assessment is up to date?

While there is no stipulation in law as to the exact timescales that your fire risk assessment should be reviewed, they should be reviewed.

Fire Safety regulations clearly state that your fire risk assessment should be reviewed regularly by the responsible person for Fire Risk assessments at your premises. Based on our experience, we recommend that you should review your fire risk assessment :

  • Every 12 months from the original date of completion
  • If the premise the fire risk assessment pertains to has changed its purpose significantly
  • After any change of structure or layout to the premises
  • If the general occupancy of the premises has changed significantly

For the safety of your employees, visitors and customers, and to remain compliant with the Fire Safety Order 2005, we would advise a fire risk assessment review at least every 12 months.

In addition, you should conduct a brand new fire risk assessment every 5 years. This ensures that any changes within your premises or with personnel that would have an effect on your fire safety provisions (e.g. extending the floor space, refurbishments or change of purpose) have been accounted for and suitably mitigated against.
